Nur Nadiah's Reflection

Plenary Sessions

(A) My key learning points from each session…
Importance of Water - Dirty and Clean

We cannot take the clean water we have for granted. In Singapore, we are very fortunate to have access to clean water. In other countries like Africa, clean water is not very accessible. So, we should not waste water as it is a very precious resource.

Revolution of Microelectronics Technology

Electronics can be found in almost everywhere. For example, it can be found in cars, XBOX 360, antibiotics and handphones. It is also pervasive. It enables entertainment, medicine, transportation, communication and such. This shows that electronics is the basis of almost everything.

Biomedical Engineering & Technology

Nano-tech is the design and fabrication of nano-materials. It has many uses. For example, it is being used to remove freckles, body odour, cleaning of water and for making different colours for contact lenses. Nano-tech does not only exist in non-living things. It is even present in mother nature. For example, sharks’ teeth.

IT for Animation by Prof Seah Hock Soon

Animation uses a lot of IT for its production. However, no matter how much IT is being integrated in animation, it still is labour-intensive. The process of animating is very tedious, hence it requires a lot of funds. The main reason why 2D animation is more expensive than 3D animation is because it is more labour-intensive as compared to 3D.

Disappearing glaciers, rising sea levels, and why gravity is even more important than
you think

Sea-level rise is dependent on the location. Hence, sea-level rise is not the same everywhere. This is due to a process called “self-attraction & loading” from melting glaciers. The further a location is from glaciers, the higher the sea level.

Deepest impression…

The plenary session that leaves the deepest impression on me is the Revolution of Microelectronics Technology because I have never thought that electronics were found almost everywhere. I also did not know of the importance of it. So, it left the deepest impression on me. What I like about it is that electronics is not only found in electronic products such as fans. It is also present in antibiotics. Other than that, it is also being used in contact lenses to enable the blind to see more clearly. I never knew that electronics can actually be applied that way. Hence, this particular talk impacted me.
